Overview of Information Science/Studies as a College Program

The Information Sciences/Studies degree program is a program that helps students understand the many ways users might seek and create electronic information. In some colleges students may also need to pursue an internship as part of their training which will allow them to get exposure into the world of Information Sciences and learn what they can expect when they enter the business world.

Information Science/Studies Curriculum

Students who choose to pursue a Bachelor's degree in Information Science/Studies his field will need to take a combination of core courses and then pursue courses based on their specializations. Students will learn many different aspects of the industry including how people (the end users) transform the information they locate into useful knowledge. The core courses will provide students with skills in the following areas:

  • Programming
  • Database management
  • Networks
  • Systems analysis and human factors

From there they will need to choose an industry-driven specialization that may include any one of the following:

  • Information systems
  • User-centered design
  • Networks and security
  • Self-designed specialization

In some colleges students may need to pursue an internship. This course information is from the University of Pittsburgh and may differ at other colleges. However, you will find the basics will be the same. The coursework will also differ if you choose the graduate program in Information Sciences/Studies.
