The Business Operations Support and Assistant Services degree is a program that prepares students to work as administrative assistants, secretaries and/or stenographers. The instruction for this degree will vary slightly depending on the concentration the student chooses but in general includes business communications, principles of business law, word processing and data entry, operation and maintenance of office machines, office procedures, public relations, secretarial accounting, filing systems and records management and preparation of reports.

Skills Developed in a Business Operations Support and Assistant Services Degree Program

Students who enter the Business Operations Support and Assistant Services degree program have a choice of several concentrations depending on the career for which they are planning. While the courses are similar, there are some differences of which you need to be aware. Administrative Assistant and Secretarial Science:
This program prepares students to become administrative assistants, secretaries or stenographers. Some of the courses students will take include business communications, principles of business law, word processing and data entry, operation and maintenance of office machines, office procedures, public relations, secretarial accounting, filing and records management and preparation of reports.

Executive Assistant/Executive Secretary:
This concentration prepares students to work as special assistants or personal secretaries for employers in top management positions. In addition to the courses listed above, students will also learn about scheduling and travel management, conference and meeting recording, supervising an office and professional standards and legal requirements.

Receptionist:
The receptionist concentration teaches students how to maintain a public relations position at the front lines in the organization. Students will learn telephone answering techniques, handling requests for information, maintaining caller and visitor logs, placing business calls, operation of telephone switchboards and other types of communications equipment, distribution of incoming and interoffice calls, and maintenance scheduling.
