Do you qualify for the Horizon Foundation Scholarship?

Horizon Foundation scholarships are funded and administered by Women in Defense (WID), a national security organization that has as its mission the goal of creating an environment in which women can grow professionally by participating in networking, work and educational events.  The purpose of the scholarships is to encourage women to choose majors that equip them to enter careers in the national security and defense industries.  Money from the scholarship is also available to women who are currently working at national security and defense jobs and to continue their educations and earn advanced degrees.

Women in Defense was founded in 1979 by seven women who had attended a trade association conference together.  Over dinner, the women discussed ways that they could assist other women, including women serving in the military, with advancing their careers and education regarding national security and defense.  The team of women started the Horizon Foundation as a non-profit organization in 1987, nearly eight years after Women in Defense was formed.  Women in Defense chapters are located around the United States.

In 1990 Women in Defense awarded its first Horizon Foundation Scholarship.  Since that time, the foundation has awarded more than 100 scholarships to women.  The numbers and amounts of scholarships the organization awards annually vary.  During the 2010 through 2011 academic year, Women in Defense awarded three scholarships ranging in amounts from $3,000 to $12,000.  Money for the scholarships is raised, in large part, through donations.
