Which Psychology Career Is Right For Me?

Majoring in psychology can be a fantastic stepping stone for one of any number of careers. Your undergraduate psychology degree will be the first level of several stages of education and training to launch a sustainable career in the field. More and more, Americans are understanding the importance of prioritizing mental health care, research, services, and support, creating a broader scope of careers that utilize the study of psychology. What will you do with your psychology degree?

The general function of a psychologist is to diagnose, treat, observe, and research psychological, mental, and emotional disorders. Psychologists may work one-on-one in patient care, with parents and families, small and large group populations, or in research and data gathering. Narrowing down between these options is an important early step in determining which type of career in psychology is right for you. After you've made a determination about the scope or population you want to be a part of your work, you can move forward to decide on an area of focus. There might be more opportunities to blend your psychology education with other passions and interests than you had previously considered. Some areas of the industry are:

Health Psychology

In this field, you might work in tandem with a medical team or directly in a hospital setting, delivering psychological care to patients with physical health issues. You'll observe the influence of various disorders and diseases including addiction and blood diseases on the mind.

Forensic Psychology

Forensic psychologists apply their understanding of the mind functions to criminal investigations and related patient care. You'll work with clients in one-on-one scenarios as well as with legal experts and law enforcement officers in the investigation of criminal events. In some cases, you may end up called upon to testify in court or be included on the team for the plaintiff or defendant.

Neuroscience Psychology

A more traditional career in psychology is in the neuroscience field, which most people think of first when they think of what a psychologist does for a living. Neuro psychologists study, diagnose, and treat the brain, focusing on things like mood and behavior, emotions, brain injuries, mental disorders, and more. In this field you'll work with children and adults, in private care or major medical settings like hospitals or other facilities.
