What are the benefits of finishing your college education? Find out!

Remember a few years ago when stories about grandparents returning to college or university to get a degree for the first time ran in newspapers and aired on television. Verbal commendations for these students’ vision, enthusiasm for learning, focus, motivation and courage were heard and felt in numerous parts of the country.  The fact is that it’s never too late to finish college or to continue your education.

Whether you’re just starting out in your career, midway through your career or preparing to retire, if you’re passionate about returning to school and getting an in-depth education in subjects that hold your interest, motivate and inspire you, then go for it.  Although it’s helpful to respect their opinions and thoughts, don’t let your spouse, significant other, children or even your parents talk you out of doing what means a lot to you.

For example, you might decide to register for classes at your local community college so that you can take a journalism course and start freelancing as a reporter for several local online and offline newspapers and magazines.  You might also decide to take an auto mechanics course or a dance class so you can gain additional skills in these areas that allow you to start your own business or even teach activities you love.  Furthermore, going back to college or university doesn’t have to be expensive if you have a clear vision of what you want to use your education to achieve.

Adults Returning to School Benefits Entire Families

Types of college or university courses you can take that will benefit you and your family as you pursue your educational goals include:

  • Courses associated with your personal passions or hobbies (e.g. creative arts, dance, athletics, cooking, communications)
  • Leadership training courses (help you to prepare to step into more senior positions on your job)
  • Communications (this is an area everyone can continue to improve in)
  • Job related courses (e.g. accounting for new finance specialists)
  • Business planning (will help you to understand how to create and manage a successful business of your own)

It’s also never too late to return to college to complete a degree you started working on after you graduated from high school.  Contact the last college or university you attended and ask them to send you a copy of your transcripts.  You’ll need these when you apply for admission to another postsecondary school, unless you plan to finish your degree at the previous college or university you attended.

When you finish school your family also benefits.  For example, by watching you follow your hearts desires, your children, spouse, other relatives and friends gain:

  • Confidence that they too can fulfill their dreams
  • Motivation to continue their own education
  • Inspiration to go after their goals with enthusiasm
  • Firsthand evidence that it’s never too late to do what you’ve long wanted to do
  • Improved lifestyle and freedom as your family’s income grows

If you go back to school with a relative, colleague or friend you’ll have a ready study partner.  You’ll also have someone to bounce ideas and questions off of.  Going back to school with a friend could also make the experience of finishing your degree or getting an advanced postsecondary degree that much more rewarding and satisfying.
